BREAKING THE BUSINESS MOLD

Alternative Practice

Each day brings new reminders that climate change and deepening inequities are reshaping the way we live. While designers possess many of the tools needed to confront these challenges, the practice of design itself demands serious rethinking. Alternative practices—those that operate outside traditional structures—offer a different approach, both in their organizational models and design methodologies.

The work of our client Maya Bird-Murphy explores experimental, risk-taking design practices across the United States to ask: How can we accelerate systems change in the design field? What can traditional firms learn from these alternative approaches? How might we collect, preserve, and share open-source knowledge? How can we foster authentic connection and dialogue? And most importantly, how might these practices be better positioned to tackle the world’s most pressing issues?

Nervy was engaged to develop a bold and vibrant identity that communicates confidence and strength through striking visual cues and an invigorating color palette, reflecting a contemporary approach to business branding.

LOGO & BRAND

We set out to create a brand that doesn’t just move forward—it leads. A beacon of social progress and business reimagined. The logotype is a warm, contemporary face marked by an arrow—a subtle but deliberate symbol of momentum. Its vertical stance speaks volumes: rise, evolve, push upward.

For the secondary typeface, we broke from tradition. A stencil cut with grit and purpose, it pulls from the streets—raw, informal, and proudly anti-corporate. It channels the energy of graffiti and tags, a visual language born from movement and rooted in place.
