Art Spore 2026 connects artists and Bay Area residents through an open-to-the-public arts mapping project.

Spore Migration and Artist Networks?

Our journey with Art Spore began with extensive research into nature, focusing on symbiotic relationships, organic mycelium networks, and spore propagation.

The symbiosis of mycorrhiza occurs when fungi receive sugars from plants in exchange for essential nutrients and water. This relationship served as the perfect metaphor for an urban infrastructure that supports cultural activity throughout the urban environment.

Ports of Access
The model of spore propagation gave us a blueprint for a database of all artists in the city, accessible via multiple electronic devices and physical “hubs,” such as stickers, physical objects, and commissioned public sculptures—also known as Spores.

The Spores are equipped with QR codes to allow entry to a website that maps all artists and art institutions. There, artists are searchable by proximity, geographic location, name, or gallery location. The site also lists open studios and art events and allows direct purchases from artists’ websites, boosting their revenue and supporting the city’s economy. (We think it would be great to purchase local art as easily as you get a cup of coffee!)

THE BRAND

A Flexible System of Infinite Possibilities

The key brand elements take cue from the dimensionality of “spores”—a form that is more sculptural and less like an icon, a shape in-between an art object and a glyph—a macroscopic image coming to life.

The identity is fluid and open, like an endless lexicon that can be re-formed and re-worked. Infinite possibilities of colors, textures, and forms combined. The system foundation stays the same; the variables change every year. Colors are revised, forms fluctuate from round to sharp, and each textures evolve.

The Logo

We wanted the logotype to feel scattered and organic, like the spores themselves dispersed with the help of the wind. A random movement, much like the migration of artists who are always in search of affordable spaces to maintain their practice in artist-friendly cities.

We want the Bay Area to become a place that supports cultural workers and fosters their economic prosperity.

THE IMPACT

Economic Growth
Art Spore enriches the city's cultural capital and supports the economic well-being of its artists. It provides a platform to gain visibility and reach a broader audience (pedestrians and culture seekers), enhancing their economic stability by increasing opportunities for their work to be sold and appreciated.

Arts Education
In a time where funding for the arts is continuously slashed, and arts education in schools is barely present, this project provides the public with deeper insights into the art world in their own city and the creative processes of local artists.

City Transformation
This model sets a new standard for how art can be experienced and appreciated in urban environments. By democratizing access, we aim to create a city where art is integrated into everyday life, fostering a culture of awareness and appreciation for the local artist community.

By activating downtown and other public spaces with artist-commissioned Spores, we are hoping to revitalize these areas, making them vibrant and engaging for both residents and visitors.

A model city where artists and art audiences are interdependent.
